Personally I use AVG antispyware Pro which is a gem of a software. It certainly detects better, updates daily, scans super fast, works even on background has a resident shield and uses min. resources. Its worth every penny of it.But do keep S&D to immunize threats while browsing.Good luck

Superantispyware has handy features like protect hijacking of the home page, even while it is not running as antispyware.
In its preferences you can choose lots of stuff to be reset to their windows defaults.

It is quite good in finding unwanted pop ups, althgough it did not get the last one i had.

Spbot is good to use as well. In one of the screens you can click a link to another download that will help in removing activex controls.

Onecare safety scanner repairs the registry (google onecare)

AVG has a good reputation in that a lot of yahoo answers people recommend it, but have heard that it sometimes gets rid valid parts of software making it unusable including windows.

But the best is to image your hard drive because I had adware that opened a new internet window every minute that none of them could find. Fortuneately i had a norton ghost image of the hard drive 6 months old. So I bought a usb hard drive and store images on it every week or so. i run onecare first then image the hard drive.

An image of XP drive and programs is about 10 gig. All my music, files etc are on another partition and not included in that image.
