Adware is totally harmless but annoying, but Spyware almost always hides in it, and it would be easier for the anti-spyware program to detect the adware, rather than the spyware that behind it, so chances are anti-spyware will cover it.
While adware is a form of spyware, what they do is slightly different. I use two forms of antispyware: Ad-Aware and SuperAntiSpyware. I run first one, then the other and then I know my computer is cleaned out.
However, spyware programs will sometimes “miss” adware. The reason is because when you install certain “free” programs you click the “accept” button on the license agreement. This gives the software (and all its baggage) permission to be installed. So, some spyware programs miss adware. Not all, some will grab it, but some miss.
The best for this is a free program called Adaware. We use it in my business and we find it is the best at getting both Spyware AND Adware.
adware is just that, tracking cookies, spyware can be malware or install adware popups, included are some trojans, and traces of a virus thats been removed. many thousand kinds of both. i use spybot 1.5 and it removes most of everything, but it only scans according to its updates.
Generally most antispyware programs cover adware
adware = advertisements
spyware = general spying/snooping
superantispyware -
adaware -
Just don’t use both at the same time. Only one spyware protection should be installed at any one time – just a tip.

It is essentially the same.

Good Luck!
spyware scanners will detect adware.
adware delivers adverts. spyware returns information about you. Sometimes adware contains spyware too.
