Is my computer safe now?

adware detection
kingofdrifters asked:

I ran my Anti-virus scan and found nothing. I have already got rid of the malware, spyware, and adware on my computer. Can my computer still be hacked? Or am I safe now to go to like my hotmail, ebay, and paypal? I’m afraid that the virus detection might miss something and if i log on to my paypal it might steal my credit card numbers.

You need to `download a firewall also. This will help keep people from hacking into your comp. I use Zonealarm.

You should turn on windows firewall, and make sure you have a password for logging into your computer and also password for your wireless if you have it.

Passwords should be long and include letters and numebrs, etc etc ..
There is no was to stop hacking 100% , even if you had all other software like spyware ,.. you may still get hacked.
All you can do is to be careful and not open emails, go to weird sites you are not familiar and don’t install softwares you don’t know what exactly they are.

Also, you should turn off your computer while away for long time, then the hackers won’t be able to access it.

Make sure you have your Firewall on and password protected account. Dont ever let your personal computer be a server , or
remote software installing and such , turn off your comp whenever your not using it.

I think its safe now but you should make some more checks with specific malware/virus tools , download the latest definitions too ,
keyloggers are the bad ones there which steal data like that , make sure you run a keylogger tool check with softwares other than what antivirus your running now .

If you actually dont trust your anti-virus , how can you trust answers from anonymous guys over here ?

If your so worried , the best solution is to do a clean hdd format and install a new and clean os , no matter what anti-virus you have , I dont think any software or anyone over here can assure you 100% safety.

Once you’ve had a virus it can have replicated into locked files and areas that your anti-virus scanner does not look in like Applications Data. I would go to the techsupportforum.com and have them check it out. It is free, but it can take a few days because it is run by volunteers. You can also try starting the computer in Safe Mode (press F8 as your computer is booting) and running your scanners. You will see all the sectors that your anti-virus programs does not look in. You should post what malware, spyware and adware you had. I had the brastk.exe and the zlob and a DNS changer. I eventually gave up and just re-installed Windows on my hard drive as I didn’t have much data on my computer that wasn’t backed up. Also, do you have a firewall installed, other than Windows?

    2. You should install good software firewall. Select an one. All are free.

Free Jetico Personal Firewall for Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP

Comodo Firewall is one of the smartest firewalls you can ever see. While providing answers to firewall questions, users usually do not understand the complex questions which involve complicated connection details like IP addresses, Ports, Application paths etc.
