My now ex-boyfriend had a little habit of going to sites that are of questionable nature, and now my laptop is running very slowly. I’ve got Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE, along with Norton Anti-Virus, which is occasionally finding worm intrusion attempts at least a couple of times a day. I never had that before either – it seems to stop them (a scan is clean) but something’s obviously on here. What else should I try?
I’ve also got WinPatrol running, but again it doesn’t catch all the spyware stuff unless it runs at startup or changes file associations. And yes, Norton kills speed, but it was running much quicker before, so it’s not the only culprit. Thanks to everyone so far, will keep working on it…

Here are some tools for your consideration:
SuperAntispyware
AVG AntiSpyware
(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after downloading and updating)
You may also want to install the following tool. It is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources and blocks many forms of spyware before it actually loads on your computer.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)
Windows Defender from Microsoft is actually pretty good. Download it for free here:
You can also use it to show what programs are loading at startup. Look for things that shouldn’t be there and have Defender remove them.
Adaware
Sypbot
1) move all of your important files off of your laptop (onto another computer or an external harddrive)
2) Find a Windows install disk and reformat and reinstall the OS
3) install AVG from
4) install Ad-Aware
your computer is being slowed down from all of the stuff thats on there. reformatting gets rid of it all and starts you over. Norton is notorious for slowing down your system. good luck!!
In general, I’ve found that SpyBot and AdAware together can catch most of the Adware/Spyware issues that come up. Both of them offer free editions. Remember that it is important to update the definitions before you run the program so that you can detect the latest Adware/Spyware. Also, try running safe mode to make sure that most of the applications on your computer are not running. When programs are running, it is difficult for SpyBot and AdAware to delete some malicious files if it conflicts with the running application. To run safemode, press F8 while your computer is starting up. Good luck!
Note: If you have a Mac, Adware/Spyware is generally not an issue.
