Only these choices. I won’t include AVG because I had it twice on my computer and I know it DOES NOT pick up major viruses and has a low detection rate. Avast does not have an adware remover, and both AVG and Avast do not perform well on virtual machines.
PC Tools Internet Security
Avira Antivirus
Comodo Internet Security
AOL McAfee Security Center
Or another “free” one that does NOT include AVG or Avast.

The top three choices are pretty good. I have PC Tools IS and it is pretty good. I have Avira on one of my laptops and its extremely light and has good detection rates. Comodo IS is really good as well and its free. The anti-virus engine is still young but its getting better fast. The Defense plus module in Comodo is superb but it does bark out a lot of questions. I think you couldn’t go wrong with either of the top three.
Ad-Aware SE and Spybot-Search & Destroy are both free. I’ve only had them two and it’s kept me hassle free for nine years of surfing the worst of the web and a ton of **** sites.

If viruses/malware are that much of a worry for you, you can save yourself an awful lot of grief by doing this:
1) Save any data you need to CD, DVD, or online drive.
2) Avoid the above problems FOR GOOD by switching to Ubuntu Linux. No software can be installed without your permission, so its immune to spyware and viruses. And, all the ports are closed by default – so you don’t even need a firewall.
You can download the whole OS here for free, or ask them to send you a free disk with the OS on it.
This will be easier than any other way to deal with viruses, or future viruses, on your computer.
Try ThreatFire. It’s free, easy to use and it works. You can download it at.
I use Avast and i must admit it has been missing a good few lately .
but i stick with it because it is better than most .
when ever i have run into big trouble i turn to the bit-defender on-line scanner to help me out .
it is very good but the whole system from bit-defender is a pain in the
a r s e. and not worth getting.
one word of advice is stear clear of McAfee or Norton.
the best advice for you at the moment is make sure you make back ups and do not bank on anything but your own vigilance at the moment.
all threats are at an all time high.

i dont really think that free and best goes together as far as antiviruses are concerned. free antiviruses are only good when the virus are not activated or they have not been clicked on. at this stage, any antivirus with realtime scanning can detect it and delete it. but once the virus is activated or you have clicked the malware by mistake, then you pc goes into this freezing stage, or windows goes popping up, or it shuts down – nothing can clean them well, except having backups.
my best free is an expired version/ account of trend micro antivirus. you can only autoupdate it once, that is after your first installation. after that, you can only update it manually by downloading the lpt file from its website then extracting the zip file into its folder. but again this is only good when you have not clicked on the virus.
i do practice having backups that is good to have. i use acronis true image (well, it is not a free program) to make a backup of the whole c drive, i do this when i have installed, updated, tweaked my pc. but i dont do an incremental backup bec this might infect my backup. then i use microsoft’s free synctoy to backup my important files like the outlook pst file, google earth files, favorites, etc. i sync the folders whenever i shutdown my pc. whenever my pc gets infected, i just reformat and reinstall windows, then reinstall acronis, then restore the acronis backup, then manually restore the synctoy folders. after these, i can have a working pc in less than 2 hours, depending on how big your c drive is (mine is about 160 gb).
another good practice is to have a d drive/ harddrive (separate or partitioned), then right click on my documents, and click on move then select d drive to move my documents to drive d. this ensures that all of your my documents are safe whenever you format your c drive.

I would choose Avira Antivirus because it picks up most of the viruses than others does. I have used it and it does not slow your computer down. Well I think that out of all of all of that I would choose either Avira or PC TOOLS.
I think it’s trial version of paid antiviruses. i use Norton Antivirus(review:)
