The total cost in money and time (or hassle) needs consideration. For example, I might get a free program but if i forget the manual updates I might get a virus that wipes out my PC. The majority of cost and time in PCs is the support not the initial purchses. If you're buying items because they are cheap or free now BUT cannot support yourself, over the life expectancy of the PC you could pay MUCH more. It is an individual choice and you have to take into account your knowledge or the person using the system. I can get you a nice SBS sever with everything installed for a couple of thousand and then a person puts a free version of something that is manual unless the 'pro' version is bought, The server crashes and it costs twice as much as the system to get it back up with thier data, if they where not too cheap to implement a backup system. So free is VERY relative and many times it can be more costly especially if the system is in the hands of less knowledgable users.
